Let's use one of the road bikes as an example. The following interchange is purely hypothetical, for purpose of demonstarting the process I am proposing we us, although the Ebay listings and prices, etc. are all real. And the bike really exists and it really is for sale. I have listed a Raleigh Technium road bike 52 cm with 700c wheels - a hot little no-apologies-needed club-racer for a person about 5'6 tall ![]() And your sweetie is 5'6 and you're looking for a hot little road bike for her.> you go to Ebay and look in: Home > All Categories > Sports > Sporting Goods > Cycling > Road Bikes & Parts > Complete Bikes And search for Raleigh Technium with 700c rims and you find Item number: 3631723273 ![]() This is the same bike, the same paint-job and everything, but 2 sizes bigger. It opened at $50 and his buy now price indicates that he expects to get something like $180 - which might be justified by the upgrade parts: you can see in the picture (of his bike) that there is an Avocet or some sort of speedometer on it. And those Look clipless pedals are definitely cool IF he includes the bike-shoes and if they fit you, and I am sure you will want a softer saddle than what I've got on this bike. But $180 still seems a bit high when you consider the freight from Kansas. Besides it's 56cm - so it's way too big for you. Let's imagine that you can imagine paying $150 for my bike. To support that offer you would then send me the following info (or something of the sort): Dear Joe: I want the Raleigh Technium. I want to pay $150 and pay you to take it to the local bike shop to have them figure out how to pack and ship it. I'll pay the freight. Here are two Ebay bike offers that are similar. No one has bid on either so i think thae asking prices are too high. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3631723273&category=7298 Item number: 3631723273 Seller information = keckels( 82) Raleigh Technium 56cm/Shim600/Clipless Current bid: US $50.00 (Reserve not met) Time left: 5 days 15 hours 7-day listing Ends Oct-20-03 10:35:26 PDT History: 1 bid (US $50.00 starting bid) High bidder: biggballer1( 50) Buy it now Price: US $180.00 Location: Western Kansas http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=7298&item=3631484333 Item number: 3631484333 Seller information lil_pinklady12( 36) Starting bid: US $175.00 Time left: 2 days 13 hours 5-day listing Ends Oct-17-03 09:00:00 PDT History: 0 bids Price: US $200.00 (immediate payment required) Location: APOPKA, FL United States /Orlando Mark Eagerman Seattle, Washington I would respond with: Hello Mark ... I just looked at Ebay and Keckels got his $180 asking price on the first day from the third bidder, who chose to use the buy it now option. So we are definitely all on the same page price-wise. So, I asssume you still want to buy it for $150 (which is looking like a pretty darned good price now). BTW, the bike shop wants $50 for shipping. For that kind of money you could actually come over to Port Townsend and pick it up ... your call. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3631723273&category=7298 Sold for: US $180.00 (Reserve met) Ended: Oct-15-03 05:50:28 PDT History: 2 bids (US $50.00 starting bid) Buyer: bikesearch1968( 3 ) Auction ended early with Buy It Now.
